So we all know its never easy to train during the Christmas holidays. As it is we're tired and drained from the long year and the thought of hitting the gym just seems like the last thing we want to do. It is, however, still important to keep the training going. Not only will it keep you energised through the holidays, but when you return to your usual routine at the beginning of 2010, gym wont seem like a long lost friend...

But lets be realistic about this. Obviously during the holidays you are not going to train as much as you normally do. So without forgetting about training altogether and sending ourselves on a guilt trip for not training, lets chat about how much training is enough to maintain you through the holidays.

It is generally considered that three aerobic (cardio) sessions and two strength (gym) sessions a week is sufficient for maintenance. However, this is obviously dependant on your current level of activity. If you usually train five times a week, with a mixture of cardio and strength, then I would suggest a minimum of three sessions a week during the holidays to keep fit but also enjoy the Christmas holidays. At the end of the day, its about what makes you feel good, so try keep active during the holidays even if it is just walks on the beach.
