Sugar or Sweetner?
Q: I have changed from using artificial sweeteners to sugar in my teas and coffees (eight cups per day), because I’ve been told artificial sweeteners can kill you. Is this true?
A: Artificial sweeteners are completely non-natural, so we should only use them in moderation. The World Health Organization has done safety trials, and determined that one can use up to 10 portions of sweeteners per day, without any health concerns. This would therefore be much better for one’s weight, than adding the extra eight teaspoons of sugar in your daily diet.

Why not try natural sweetners like xylitol or stevia? Stevia is very similar to artificial sweetners in that it has a slightly funny aftertaste, but you use very small quantities of it because it is so sweet. Xylitol looks and tastes exactly like sugar but is completely natural. These sweetners used to be found only in health stores but I've noticed that xylitol has become available in the local supermarkets like Checkers and Pick 'n Pay. The only downside to these sweetners is that consuming too much will have a laxative effect!
I've found a really great sweetener called 'Sweet-A-Vita', which is a stevia blend & doesn't leave the stevia-like after-taste. It's found online or at health stores.
