Fatburners and breastfeeding
Q: Can I Use Fatburners While Still Breastfeeding?
Q: My baby is 16 months old and as I'm over 40, it is not easy to get a lift on my metabolism. I have started to eat properly – 6 small meals per day and I drink a lot of water. Can I use any fatburners – as I am still breastfeeding my child?
A: I would not recommend fat-burners, especially while you are still breastfeeding. The chemical compounds in these products can be transferred through your breastmilk and may be harmful to your child.
It is very difficult to increase metabolism because it is mainly determined by our genetics, which we can’t change and it also decreases naturally as we get older. The few things that we can do that may influence metabolism do not have a big impact on our weight, because their effect on metabolism is so small.
If you’re trying to lose weight, you need to reduce the amount of food you are eating and increase the amount of activity you are doing every day. Having six smaller meals may mean that you are still eating more than your body needs – try having three smaller meals with one small snack, mid-morning or mid-afternoon.
Start being more physically active every day (consult your doctor before exercising, if you have not exercised for a long time). Add brisk walking, doing housework, taking stairs instead of lifts to your day - these all count towards boosting your activity level.
For the best results and practical help with what and how much to eat to help you reach a healthy weight, it’s best to see a registered dietician for an individual consultation. The dietician will look at your personal needs and lifestyle and support and guide you with changes where necessary. Ask your GP or specialist to refer you to a dietician in your area.
