foundation and covering up
How To Wear Foundation
Monday was beauty shoot day at Women's Health and I used my time with make-up artist Jade Leggat to get a few insider tips and tricks. One hot topic was foundation. It’s my belief that so many SA women use far too much base – and even if they don’t really need to. Even though I’m a beauty editor, I often go for days without wearing any foundation, just to give my skin a chance to breathe.
Some might think I’m brave (others, crazy) but I have learnt that if I’m having a good skin day, it’s best to either not cover up at all or just cover what I need to. Jade’s approach is this: foundation should only even out your complexion and not cover up your skin.
Jade’s best foundation application tip is to apply your make-up to the middle area of your face and then blend it outwards. In other words, she works outwards, covering only what she needs to, blending the foundation into the skin completely.
So, what does she use to blend? Jade’s favourite tools are a foundation brush and a wedge shaped sponge.
So, here’s how: using a sheer moisturising foundation (great for glow) sweep the make-up over your skin with a foundation brush (from the middle outwards) and then use your sponge to go over areas where more blending is required. The result should be an evened out skin tone and no sign of any foundation ‘sitting’ on your skin.
Another great tip is to swap your usual foundation for something much lighter in texture such as a tinted moisturizer. I have just been to tea with the glamorous gals at Elizabeth Arden and was thrilled to sample their new Pure Finish Mineral Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 (yay to the SPF!) that will sell for R235 – a super texture and great finish. Look out for it on counter next month.
About this blog

Hello beauty junkies, I’m Helen, a contributing editor for WH and a beauty journalist – a dream job that I’ve had for the past five years. While I’ve always been make-up obsessed, I’m a naturalist; I love make-up that’s completely wearable rather than make-up that completely wears you. I love to share and will be sharing my best new beauty finds and user-friendly tips with you.

im gettin married at the end of July this year. i dnt use foundation, bt i want to use a base for my wedding. im indian and its goingto be a big wedding. i went to edgars the w/end for a trial make over and i hated it. what do i do, im thinking about doing my own make up, but i dnt know the last thing abut foundations. i wnt a very natural bt wow look.
Great article. Ditto on the moisturise! Nothing looks as bad as foundation applied to dry skin...
Hi! :)
Perhaps try the Dream Matt Mousse...it blends in nicely, it's really light, so touching up during your wedding, won't look like you've plastered on layers of it...it offers good coverage also-and you'll have a matt finish, so you won't shine on the camera! ;)
Choose a colour that is closest to your skin tone, otherwise you may look like a Geisha doll, lol....
Sample a few tones, and make sure you do this when your face has already been waxed or bleached...
xoxo
Hope this helps
Hi there anonymous 1, had the same problem - am also Indian :) But MAC make-up really helped me, went for a trial and I was (ok) happy with it. Then on my big day, my lady wasn't around - it seems there was a little angel sitting on my shoulder and a very calm and collected saviour did my make-up magnificently!! Just always remember to ask for a natural and mineralised look as the writer says above! Don't panic! Try a few options and see what works best for you :) Good luck!
