Be Front-Row Fabulous!
Whew! What a crazy week I've had. I've just returned from Joburg, where I spent last week covering Sanlam SA Fashion Week. I was doing video interviews with designers and photo stories backstage, so literally had the best behind-the-scene experience available, not to mention a front row seat to check out what the most fabulous fashionistas were wearing.
This is what you need to look ‘front-row’ fabulous:
Double-Breasted Jacket: Girls, the shoulder pad is back in a big way. And the hottest way to wear it is in a double-breasted blazer, last seen on the likes of Joan Collins in Dynasty. Say hello to power dressing, but bring it back to the modern ages by wearing it over loose-fit chinos with the hem rolled up to the ankle and a plain white t-shirt.
Stacked Heels: Flats are so last season, especially with the shorter length pants (like the harem) that are big right now. Stacked heels often come with a built-in platform, making them slightly more comfortable, but be warned, these heels are not built for comfort so don't do what I did and try and stand in a new pair for eight hours at Fashion Week!
Dark Nail Polish: I had the fabbest manicure just before I left in a metallic charcoal colour. Sounds hectic, but on short nails, it looks seriously stylish. Other shades I saw at SSAFW were deep red, navy and silver. So next time you have one, ask to see your nail technician’s colour wheel before choosing a shade.
Geeky Specs: Dark, horn-rimmed Clark Kent-style specs were the order of the day. Be warned, you need edgy hair to pull this look off; otherwise the look really will be more geek than chic.
Chanel-Style Pearls: Take inspiration from the Coco Before Chanel movie and layer your pearls (fake or real) in long strands around your neck. Looks fantastic against black or navy. Try pairing them with a round-necked T-shirt or a simple sheath dress, and always, always wear with post-box red lipstick.
