how balancing diet and exercise can improve your feel-good factor
The Power Of Diet And Exercise
Healthy eating and regular physical activity are a dream team when it comes to staying healthy and boosting your feel-good factor.
If you're one of those people who dread exercise, it might be helpful for you to know that exercise doesn't have to mean running until you drop, or push-ups and army-camp routines. Exercise is actually any physical activity that gets your body moving above a resting level.
So, you can make it a part of your everyday routine – walking up the stairs instead of taking the lift, dancing at a party on the weekend, cleaning your house or just plain walking. In fact, research has shown that regular brisk walking can help to control blood pressure, weight, cholesterol levels and prevent heart disease and diabetes.
For health benefits, physical activity needs to get your heart beating faster and needs to add up to at least 30 minutes a day. You can split up those 30 minutes into several parts if it's difficult for you to do 30 minutes continuously. For example, you could take three brisk 10-minute walks every day, one after each meal.
So, as long as you are moving regularly and pushing up your heart rate, you are improving your health.
Following a healthy diet often feels like hard work. To try and make it simple and practical, I've put together some uncomplicated tips.
Five simple tips to boost your nutrition
Try one of these every day and then slowly infuse them into your life. These tips are aimed at improving eating habits and the overall nutritional quality of your diet.
Have breakfast within an hour or two of waking up – include a high-fibre cereal or grain, one of your five daily portions of fruit and vegetables and a portion of low-fat or fat-free milk or dairy (or a calcium-rich alternative).
Have at least ½ cup of beans or peas.
Have a portion of fish, healthfully prepared (no crumbs) –make sure it's on the SASSI green list.
Try one new fruit today – it can be fresh, canned, dried or frozen, but make sure it does not contain added fat or sugar.
Try one new vegetable today – go with something bright in colour (bright green, yellow or orange).

I suffer from Fibromalgia and IBS and have been following the 17dd diet, I have oats in the morning with flaxseed and honey, snack is low fat yoghurt with strawberries/blueberries, lunch is chicken/fish salad or veg and roughly the same for dinner, I excercise every day except Sundays, doing weights, walking, kettlebell, yoga......but am still battling terribly with pain in my body...I also take omega 3, primrose oil, multivitamins, drink water and have green tea...where am I going wrong??
Hi Vivien
Thank you for your question.
Firstly, its important to be sure that you are doing the right type of physical activity as fibromyalgia impairs joints and/or soft tissues and causes chronic pain, along with many other symptoms.
The type, frequency and intensity of the exercise you are doing may be worsening your pain and discomfort. I would therefore recommend that you consult an expert, for example a physiotherapist or biokineticist, who can assist you with an individualised exercise program tailored around your fibromyalgia and symptoms.
Unfortunately, no specific diet has been proven to influence or improve fibromyalgia. However, it is obviously important to have a healthy, balanced diet. Proper nutrition will also help you avoid other health problems.
Based on your description, your diet sounds generally healthy and balanced.
Just be careful of taking too many supplements – its important to remember that if a “little of something” is good then "a bit extra or more" is not necessarily “even better”.
This holds true with dietary supplements and megadosing/high doses of dietary supplements is not recommended.
I suggest that you consult a dietitian for advice about dietary supplements. The dietician will look at your personal nutritional needs, your diet and lifestyle and will then guide you with regard to supplementation. You can ask your GP or specialist to refer you to a dietician in your area.
I'm trying to loose weight & have fallen off the wagon too many times.I've started again monday 12/09/11 & my goal is to loose between 10-15kgs by January 2012.I'm not sure if this is realistic however I'm determined to loose some weight before my 31st birthday.
This is what I'm currently doing:30-45 minutes brisk walking & jogging in between,30-45 minutes cardio which includes strength training.I eat around 700-900 calories a day & 2L water a day.Is this enough for me to loose that weight?I'm currently 95kgs (size 38/40) & 168cm tall.My confidence & self-esteem have hit rock bottom.I dont appreciate anything that I see in the mirror & I'm desperate to get the my pre-baby figure.

I started exercising this year for the first time in 12 years. I am lucky that I have never been over wait. I have started walking 2.5km in the morning and in the evening. I am now at 5km in the evening and can run one of those km it is more than a shuffle but I feel great. I have firmed up and every day I just think what can I accomplish in a months time from now. The best thing is that nothing I do is a effort any more. After 3 kids I forgot that I ones had a great body LOL now I take what I GET THANKS. I am 43 my youngest child is 6 I owe it to her to be a functioning mom until she is out of the house. Ladies get moving it is worth it, and do it for your self, it is my free time and i love it.
I was actually just looking for a smoothly recipe that I can drink before my walk.
