The best way to achieve the exercise resolutions you choose is by setting out clear goals...

So it is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to 2010. Being as passionate as I am about football, this year was been an unbelievable year in terms of sport and I (as I'm sure many others did as well) loved celebrating Africa's first World Cup. But 2011 is upon us and so it brings all new challenges and excitement along with it.

I think every New Year that comes along I tend to make less and less New Year's Resolutions. And I think its because I never actually achieve some of the resolutions I set out.

So for 2011 I think the best way for all of us to get around this is to set goals to go along with your resolutions. And by setting short-term and long-term goals this can help us achieve these sometimes very daunting resolutions. For instance, if your New Year's resolution is to lose weight then set yourself a long-term target as to how much weight you want to lose and then set short-term targets that will help you get to your goal weight over time.

The same applies if your resolution is not weight-loss related. For instance, one of my New Year's resolutions is to complete the Half Iron-Man Triathlon next year. Then I will set myself short-term goals like finishing a couple of marathons and bike races and maybe even one or two triathlons with the bigger goal of finishing half Iron-Man as my New Year's resolution.

The wonderful thing about these short-term goals is that they hold us accountable to getting closer to these resolutions. Otherwise by March or April the goal seems so daunting and the exhilarating buzz of the New Year has left us and we'll be having the same discussion come 2012.

Here's wishing you all a very happy, healthy and fitness filled 2011!
