How to avoid split ends
Q: Help I Have Split Ends
Q: I have a lovely hairdresser and she noticed I had severe split ends and suggested I cut my hair shorter to get rid of the ends. I listened to her and we cut about 4cm off... Only to have the ends split again two months later. So we cut another 4cm off and you guessed it... had it split again! My hair from being on my bra line is now just touching my collarbone after all the cutting I've done to get rid of the dead ends. I'm heartbroken! It’s my dream to have my long hair back! Can you please help me? Give me some tips for the splits?
A: After chatting to a few hair stylists, it seems like there must be more to your situation. Do you heat style your hair? Any type of heat styling will add to split-end-situations. Try and leave your hair for a month with only heat styling every four days and make sure you apply an overnight hair nourishing mask every weekend. When you swim, wet your hair with tap water and then add an intensive conditioner. It may not look that fantastic, but it will protect your hair from the elements. The secret is to cut back on styling and heat so you don’t have to cut it as often.

Hey there gal! I hope u get my comment, i also had the same problem as you. Dont cut any more of your hair off. I use straiteners and heat styling at least 5 times a weak. Before i dry my hair, i put in straitening balm, which protects your hair from the heat and after blowdrying i straiten it very fast as to not damage my hair. Then i switch my hairdryer to cold and i give it a quick swoosh. It locks the ends of your hair, i.e:avoiding splits. Then i take hairwax and apply only a wee bit from the roots to the tips. It seals in moisture and gives your hair great shine.
Also after you've washed your hair, be sure to rinse it with cold water. It also helps with the splits. You can put silicone serum on the tips as well before you dry them. Works like a charm! Check out kair silicone serum for split ends, costs about R45 but you get 3-4 months use out of that little sucker, even if you use it every single day. Get Vo5 straitening balm and perfect touch shine and hold wax. Good luck and be Happy sister! Cause if you follow this advise, you WILL BE split free! ;-)
Hi there Caro and Olivia.
Thank you both for the advice. Here is the real rubbish part though... I DON'T USE ANY HEAT ON MY HAIR!!! I don't even dry my hair with a hair-dryer. My hair just splits so badly its not a joke. I know, my hairdresser is also baffled. You'd think with the way it looks I straighten morning, noon and night and I deep fry my hair in oil but I don't!! Its horrible!
If I pull the tips of my hair I get tiny pieces from as short as 1cm to as long as 8cm breaking off. I am feeling so horrendous about this. I don't know what to do. I have tried EVERYTHING except a hot oil treatment. I bought MASSIVELY expensive shampoo and conditioner and that has helped a tiny bit in the sense that my hair is the slightest bit longer but I still have split ends. What else can I do? I'm on such a healthy diet of fruit and veg and meats and cooking with no oils and added fats. I drink 1 - 1.5 liters of water a day. I've been on Yasmin for almost two years now. Could that be a factor? Oh beauty Caro, Sweet Olivia, any further advice? I'm going to buy that serum, bugger the cost!
Hi again, get the silicone for split ends, start drinking protein shakes, just one a day it makes your hair grow too. And u might wanna go see a doctor as there might be something wrong in your body or you might have a shortage of vitamins or minerals in your body. Ask for a bloodtest to see if you have any shortages and speak to a doctor. That pill may also be the cause of your hair splitting and breaking, just read the little pamphlet inside and get hairwax to strengthen your hair and make it shine. You must get leave-in oil and put that on twice a week. It's the same as hot oil, except you don't heat it up and you don't wash it out either. Try it out, it feeds your hair. If you colour a lot, skip for as long as you can, and when you colour again, ask your hairdresser to start colouring about one centimer FROM your scalp. The dye burns your hair. If you perm a lot, STOP THAT immediately. Buy curling mousse and put that in instead. Best of luck to you, keep me posted. If you need any more advise, leave your email address here and i'll contact you. Or we can just mail from here, in case someone else takes your address too.
P.s:if there is any shortage of anything in your body, it will get it from your hair first and then the other parts of your body.
Hey kelee:-) i took the liberty of doing some research 4 u. Go to google, type in causes of split ends hair, and ull get all the answers u need.
Dis what i got... Avoid recurrence by having a trim every 6 weeks. The longer u leave the splits, the longer they will climb up the hair shaft.
As soon as the hair is being brushed or combed through, the splits re-appear.
The only real solution for split ends, is simply avoiding them. Some people's hair split a lot faster than others. Dry hair splits faster.
How u take care of ur hair is important. Over brushing will cause split ends and exaggerated back combing will also make the hair split since it is disturbing the cuticle.
Brushing when still wet is one of the causes for split ends because wet hair stretches by 25%. Colouring and perms make hair weak and vulnerable to splits.
Use a lot of conditioner and comb hair through before rinsing it out.
Towel drying is not good if u want to avoid splitting hair. Blot ur hair then carefully comb through with a wide toothed comb.
Elastic bands damage ur hair. Avoid using uncovered elastic bands since these often pull out hair when being removed.
Your health will affect ur hair- if u have a dry scalp ur hair will split faster cause theres not enough lubrication on the hair follicle.
Dull hair caused by a LOW FAT DIET will also be more vulnerable and cause splits.
You should try taking Chelapreg as you may be lacking in vitamins and minerals as well as being slightly anaemic. Chelapreg has chelated iron which is the easiest for your body to absorb, your hair and nails will grown beautifully.

Hi Kelee
I've been bleaching my hair a lot and ended up with the same problem as you - constant hair breakage, and bits about 1cm shedding when I comb it.
What's worked wonders for me is Style Aromatherapy Intensive Repair Hair Mask - I use it every time I wash my hair and leave it in for an hour, or even overnight. Smells amazing and works like a beast!
The Charles Worthington hair mask is also really good. Both are available from Clicks!
Good luck!
