By now, you've probably noticed that the Breton stripe is a key item for this season.

Having stood the test of time, this sea-worthy staple has weathered the storm from the early days of Coco Chanel, who first drew inspiration from French sailors in Brittany, all through the decades until today, where it has again found its way into designer collections and celeb wardrobes.

We've seen it on everyone from Rachel Bilson, Alexa Chung, Kate Moss and Elle McPherson. They wear it their way, combining rock and roll, oversized sleeves, casual Capri pants or denim shorts.

We're pretty sure it works with everything.

Some people shy away from the horizontal stripe. Our mothers told us it was unflattering and that it made you look wide, drew too much attention to the wobbly bits or added a few pounds, but we say rubbish! They can be worn by any body type, with a fresh update and a reinterpretation, which doesn't have to have anything to do with the nautical theme.

  • Paired with a skinny-legged pair of trousers or jeans works really well. A plain block of colour below will keep the eye focused on your upper half.
  • Take inspiration from the lady herself, Coco Chanel, in Coco Avant Chanel. She wears it with a masculine pair of trousers. High-waisted and wide legs will automatically trim down the waistline.
  • Let the stripe be the hero. Pattern and print can obviously work, but keep it simple. Tone down the accessories and don't mix too much colour.
  • For the office pair with heels and a boyfriend blazer. The result is smart, but with a modern edge.
Rolled chinos with a tucked in Breton striped tee and pumps... you'll feel like you're on a European holiday. What do you love most about the Breton stripe and how do you wear yours? Tell us below...
