Q: Please can you tell me what products are best to use on pigmentation problem skin. I would love to sort this issue out. Can a serum for scars help? And what precautions can be taken with the sun?

A: While certain products do help with reducing the severity of pigmentation, the real answer here is prevention is better than cure. You must wear a high-factor facial sunscreen (applied to your neck, ears and chest area too) every day – and not just when you know you're going to be exposed to the sun. Staying out of the sun is of course best, but not always possible. So, protect yourself all day and every day with an absolute minimum of an SPF 30. For home use try a product such as Clinique's Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector (call +27 11 516 3000 for stockists) but realise that it's a commitment, so you must be religious about your usage and of course about applying sunscreen. Try this instead of serums that target scars only – you really want the right product here that'll treat this specific skin condition. But do make an appointment with a dermatologist too as there are treatment options that show great results and your derm will be able to diagnose your skin properly and recommend the best plan of action.
