We love scarves. They are our favourite fashion accessory and we are always on the look out for rare gems. They can be a cheap way of feeling like you have a whole new outfit, they can boost your skin tone and make you look good in any colour. Even if nudes wash you out and make you look awful, all it takes is a scarf in the right hue and you're looking great.

And when it comes to tying them, well that just opens a whole new realms of opportunity. I know we all have enough decisions to make on an average day, but the way you tie your scarf can say a lot about you, as it can complete an outfit.

So, we thought that instead of our usual two drapes over the shoulder as we run out the front door, we'd have a look for a few more creative ways of wearing our beloved neck warmers – and these are a few of our favourites...

Best Ways To Tie Your Scarf

The square scarf is clearly the trickiest, but who doesn't want to look as elegant as Audrey Hepburn in her jauntily tied Hermes silk? Okay, well, we do and here's how: Fold the scarf into a triangle by grabbing one corner and bringing it to the opposite corner. Then you roll the scarf, starting from the long side and working toward the pointy end of the triangle. Not too tight mind, you don’t want to look like you have a noose around your neck. Wrap the roll around your neck and tie a knot, pull it to the side. If it's long enough add a bow.

For the usual long scarf, how you tie it really depends on who you are, and, of course the weather. With a Pashmina, fold it in half and position the centre at the front of your neck with the ends draped over your back. Crisscross the ends and bring them over to the front. Tie a loose knot at the front and tuck it underneath the wrapped portion of the Pashmina, keeping the upper layer loose. Pull down the top layer to cover the knot.

To keep it simple you can drape it, a la Sienna Miller. Take a long scarf and flick one end casually over your shoulder, leaving the other to hang down the front of your outfit.

For a cosier approach, fold the scarf in half, wrap it around the back of your neck and in front, pull the two ends through the loop at the other end. This is a unisex approach that we favour with thick, chunky scarves in winter.

And of course, if it's too hot to wear it, just tie it to the strap of your handbag for a chic way to update your bag.

You can get some amazing scarves at vintage stores anywhere in the country. They always have an amazing collection. We’ve also found some gems at Accessorize as well as department stores like Mr Price and Woolworths. Happy hunting!
