The first question is – why invest in a set of make-up brushes? The answer is simple: you will get a professional finish when you use the right brush in the right way.

Blue squirrel (the best quality and the most expensive), pony hair, goat and sable are the top choice not only because they are natural, but because, like human hair, these bristles have cuticles so they grab the pigments in the make-up and hold onto they until you put them where you want them.

Focus on Shape and Size

Now there is no need to get a matching set of brushes. What you need to concentrate on is the shape and size – that’s first prize.

Brushes should be slightly domed shape (because it rolls across the skin with the least drag). At the minimum you would need four: a large powder brush, a smaller fluffy brush (for blush, bronzer, and/or highlighter), an eye-shadow brush the size of a fingertip and a smaller shadow brush (for smudging and blending).

It’s not easy to achieve a smooth finish with a foundation brush unless you are super-experienced. It’s easier to dab on the foundation with a sponge (a dash on the forehead, chin, cheeks and nose) and then use the foundation brush to blend all round the face.

It’s useful to have two concealer brushes: one about a half inch wide for under the eyes and a tiny, pointy one for blemishes.

Last Bits of Advice

Take your time and buy good quality when you can – there is no race to get a full set, so make sure you buy the best. A good make-up brush set is considered an investment that would never need to be replaced.

Also synthetic bristles are really only good for applying creams and liquids.
