tips on Safe Hair Colouring
Q: Ammonia-Free Hair Dye?
Q: Is there a hair colour option with no peroxide and no ammonia? I can't use any hair colour as I get an allergic reaction. Help!
A: Yes, there are ammonia-free options, but you need to discuss the level of peroxide with your colourist. Peroxide is what's known as the 'activator' but there are different levels your hair stylist can work with, so tell him or her about your concerns. What might work for you is a colour shampoo as this contains the lowest level of peroxide. Carlton Hair International offers ammonia-free colour treatments as well as colour shampoo options, so for a salon in your area call +27 11 646 2420. Also investigate INOA by L'Oreal Professionnel, an ammonia free hair colouring system (it's an in-salon colour treatment). For a salon in your area, call 0860 102 491.
About this blog

Hello beauty junkies, I’m Helen, a contributing editor for WH and a beauty journalist – a dream job that I’ve had for the past five years. While I’ve always been make-up obsessed, I’m a naturalist; I love make-up that’s completely wearable rather than make-up that completely wears you. I love to share and will be sharing my best new beauty finds and user-friendly tips with you.

Herbatint permanent dye is ammonia free and lasts just as long as other big brands. Works pretty darn well, unlike some so-called natural stuff. It's a pleasure to use as it doesn't stink at all. They do a semi-permanent version which is apparently also peroxide free, though I haven't tried it. You can buy it at Wellness Warehouse and some health shops. The illustration on the box is poor, but shops usually have a separate colour chart, which is better.
