what dresses to wear this season
Party Dresses This Season
We love this time of year. We always get excited around mid-November, when the weather heats up and the prospect of holidays, parties and general fun in the sun is on the horizon. The party season is almost upon us, we can smell it!
When party season dawns, it's time for a new dress. If you've got an old faithful that you haul out for every Christmas cocktail party then good on you but perhaps it's time for a little something new? This season, party dresses are all about the ultra-feminine nipped-in waist, Mad Men-style tea frocks and a touch of real flower power. Are you brave enough?
When choosing a new party dress, that you want to last the seasons and still look good in five years time, then here are a few things to consider...
- Bold pattern and print is in vogue now and can look amazing, but if you're searching for a wardrobe classic that you are willing to spend some money on and that you want to last a long time, then go for solid colour. They don't call the LBD 'a classic' for nothing.
- Consider the length. We don't want to put you in a box and say it depends on your age, because these days, that doesn't matter. However, too short and next year you might be regretting your boldness. On the knee or slightly above is sexy, feminine and more versatile.
- We always think that simplicity is the key to beauty. For a classic party dress that you can wear to a posh cocktail party as well as a day wedding go for something simple that makes you feel amazing whenever you slip it over your head.
- Keep an eye on what's on the catwalk at fashion week. They can be extreme, but they'll give you an idea of where the trends are headed for the next season.
- Always take a friend with you to give you a second opinion!

I seriously battle to find a summer dress that fits well. I am a pear shape and there are soooo many that look amazing on the hanger but awful when trying them on. Do you have any advice on what to look for when buying a summer dress for a pear shape?
Thanks.
The dress in the picture is gorgeous! Where could we find it? or somethign similar?
Thanks a stack
With a voluptuous pear shape, you can make the most of the pattern tea dress. Channel the early-60s Mad-Men style with a high neck and busy pattern, which will exaggerate your chest and help balance out the lower body. Either that or a strapless style, which will draw attention to the upper half of your body. Now go forth and shop and if you find something, let us know. Good luck!
Found two dresses. One summer floaty halter-neck from Foschini and a little black dress from YDE.
They don't have much for the pear shape and you have to hunt and shop around for ages. All of the summer dresses this season seem to be of the 'baby doll' variety with the elasticated bust and flared out from just under the elasticated part. Flattering to some but not to a pear.
Im off to a day beach wedding at Yserfontein in the Cape...and I'm looking for a dress. I really dont know which stores to start shopping at. Im not a fan of mainstream stores...i do like something more individualistic and classic...please help! :) The wedding is in a week! :)
If you are looking for something unique try having a dress made. I found a picture of a dress that was totally me and ordered it through South African Bride, they import made to measure dresses. I didn’t have to wait all that long for delivery either and I didn’t have the hassle of having to deal with shipping and import duties as they did that for me.
