What would email look like if it were invented today? That's the question Google's engineers think they've answered with Google Wave.

So what is Google Wave exactly? According to Wikipedia, "It is a web-based service, computing platform, and communications protocol designed to merge email, instant messaging, Wiki, and social networking".

Basically, it allows you to have a conversation with someone – similar to an email – but in real time.

That is, you can actually see the person on the other end typing... crazy I know! This has all sorts of advantages, moving traditional email communication from a question and answer model, to one of genuine interactivity.

Anyways, Google have – today – started inviting users to try out Wave. Unfortunately it's invite-only, but it won't be long before we're all waving away!
