Some sock materials are better than others at preventing blister-causing friction, according to a study at the University of Missouri. Researchers developed a device to measure friction levels between socks and shoes, then tested it using 10 popular brands of athletic socks at five different moisture levels.

Sock verdict?

Cotton socks chaffed the most at a high moisture (meaning they’re most likely to cause blisters), while nylon- and acrylic-fibre socks had lower friction levels.

“Non-cotton socks wick away moisture, so they’re less likely to cause blisters,” study co-author Rebecca Rone says.

Look for nylon- or acrylic-blend athletic socks with little or no cotton.
