Both. It’s normal and natural to breathe through your nose and mouth at the same time. Keep your mouth slightly open, and relax your jaw muscles.

I battle with aching shins when I try run a short distance - is this to do with my takkies or just my terrible fitness level? I am also about 25kg overweight - could that be it?
@michele - It could be that the shoes are wrong for you. A visit to a running shop or podiatrist could rule that out. Other common (cheaper to fix) causes include not stretching your calves properly before starting, coming down too hard on your heels and just the fact that running is new to your body.
Ice to the top inside of your foot, where the ankle meets the bridge, should ease the pain.
I would go to a good running shop and have them look at your running style, foot landing etc so you can be fitted with the right running shoe for you. I had the same problem when i switched shoes to a asics nimbus...switched back to a cumulus have had no aching shins since.
I start my 10 weeks to 10kms training today and Im so glad Iv just read this!! thanks for all the valuable info WH!
I love running...although I have just got going again after quite a long break.
My advice to beginners would be to;
- Start with intervals, run a few minute, then walk a minute etc. As this way you can build up your running, but also it's a great exercise to alternate between, different work levels for the body.
- Keep your upper body upright, otherwise something that is challenging in the beginning, will be twice as tough. It is a good idea to read up about running technic, just to get the basics right, as it makes running a lot easier.
- Another thing I found, that when I finally manage to run for a solid 15 minutes, it gets easier. So for me the 15 minutes line, seems to be the golden gate. After that my legs feel lighter and i realize I can run for another 15 minutes.
I have become to realize that running is a passion of mine.

Great info... But now... Where do I find the right diet, or meal plan???
Hi
I am in my second week of interval training. I will eventually be able to run 5KM after 9 weeks!!!!!
I do get terrible cramps in my feet when walk and jog. I have proper running shoes bought at a sport shop and a size bigger than I normally wear. They gave me thick socks at the store. Could it be that my shoes are too tight?
