The Skipping Rope Workout
Get toned and fit in no time.
Skipping is a great form of cardio which will tone and shape your bod too!
Skipping (also known as jump rope) is a great form of cardiovascular exercise. It is an essential part of many elite sportsmen and women’s conditioning routines. It also is a great exercise to use to tone and shape your body.
Skipping will seriously work most of your muscles in the body. I can assure you that if performed properly, you will feel sore in muscles you never knew you had. By activating your core while skipping you will increase the strength of your stabilisers, as this is needed while you propel your body through the air. Another advantage of skipping is that you can take it anywhere, so if you’re going away on holiday where there is no gym, you can take your gym with you.
Skipping Rope Workout
Skip for 3 minutes (easy pace) to warm up
Rest for 1 minute
Skip for 1 minute as fast as you can
Rest for 30 seconds
Skip for 1 minute alternating skipping on left and right foot (15 seconds each foot)
Rest for 30 seconds
Skip for 1 minute
Rest for 30 seconds
Perform as many push ups as possible in 30 seconds
Skip on alternating legs for 1 minute
Rest for 30 seconds
Perform as many sit ups as possible in 30 seconds
The possibilities with this are endless. You can change the sit ups/push ups to lunges or squats or to anything that you wish. You can increase skipping time or skip using both feet or alternate on left/right. You can vary the speed at which you skip. Use your imagination and you can have a really good workout!
Tip: Don’t skip on concrete or other hard floors. Also, because skipping works the whole body very hard, be sure to stretch properly afterwards!

Yeah...i can't wait to start this :) i love skipping!!!
Can we please get this in a download version?
I've made myself a whole workout folder with your awesome workout downloads and cards from the magazine...the layout is pretty neat :)
and thanks for all your effort with the coolest mag and website ever!!!
If hard floors are discouraged, what's recommended? Carpet? Grass? Tile floor with exercise mat?
Also, how safe is barefoot skipping?
Do you know of any 'how-to' videos concerned with different skipping techniques? Because I can only do the skipping where it looks like you're jogging. And there are a lot of trainers out there that say that skipping simultaneously off both feet is much more effective for exercising your core muscles. I just can't seem to do it right.
Skipping in the "jog manner" is not skipping. Then you might as well go jogging. You have to jump with both feet in the air in a swift and unified movement. You do this by activating your core. In the same movement you quickly swing the rope under your feet. You can't be lazy with this exercise. I also find it works my shoulders/arms if you do it for a long enough period. I used to jump 2000 jumps , stretched out over about 20/30 min. It gets boring after a while, but I'm going to try mixing it up with other exercises in between sets.
Skipping can be hard on knees, so wearing proper "takkies", on grass should minimize the impact as well.
Chrysi - I found this link on skipping. It's done from a boxing perspective, but it looks pretty helpful. He suggests doing the running-in-place-skipping at first, until you can manage more complex stuff.

Great comments ladies!
To Pattilain- about the surface used to skip on. It is generally suggested that you stay away from skipping on concrete floors. Soft wood floors are good, but of course this is not always ideal. Grass is also ok. I would suggest using gym shoes to skip in, if you dont have those then running shoes are the next best option.
Thanks for the comments. Hope you are having fun with your skipping programs!
