When the temperature drops – and boy has it been dropping lately – our natural instinct is to hibernate. We reach for the decades-old gowns, brew endless cups of rooibos and look for any excuse to curl up under our favourite blankets. And while it’s comforting to know so many South African households revert back to the exact same winter survival routine year after year, creating a space at home that tackles (rather than exacerbates) those serious mood- and motivation-dampening effects of the season is about more than solidarity in soup.
The air quality, temperature and even the ambient noise of your living space directly impact your circadian rhythm, stress levels and skin health. That’s why, when the Mill Gentle Air WiFi Oil-Filled Radiator 2000W arrived at my home on a particularly chilly afternoon, I was excited to see how it differed from the typical greige oil heaters most of us grew up hovering over. Because while we depend on them to get us through the mornings when the hadedas start rising later, a heater isn’t exactly something we upgrade often. In fact, many of our heaters have likely been passed down through generations – a very hot heirloom in desperate need of a modern update.

Because here’s the thing you might not realise: traditional heaters are notorious for stripping your skin barrier of moisture and creating a stuffy, loud environment that completely tanks a good night’s rest. So we put this sleek, smart radiator to the test to see if it could provide the gentle, nurturing warmth your body actually craves. Here is our honest review.

The Design: Scandi Minimalism For Your Living Space

If we’re being completely honest, most portable heaters are total eyesores (we’re looking at you, clunky greige bars we all grew up with). Their most notable features are that they’re metallic, awkward to look at and swiftly hidden behind the couch the second guests come over.
The Mill Gentle Air is completely different though. True to its Scandinavian roots, it has a minimalistic aesthetic with rounded edges, a clean matte finish and sleek aluminium feet. Thanks to a unique closed design, it looks more like a premium computer tower than a traditional radiator, blending seamlessly into a modern space. Best of all for anyone who hates flat-pack furniture? It requires zero assembly and comes right out of the box with those chic feet already attached. It’s literally plug and play!

What We Loved
It’s slim and compact enough to tuck into a cosy reading nook, place next to your yoga mat for an at-home hot yoga sesh or sit beautifully in a bedroom corner without disrupting your aesthetic.
Remarkably efficient, it takes just 15 minutes to take the harsh edge off a freezing room so you can actually use your space comfortably. We’re also giving it major safety points for a flat front panel that stays moderately cool, meaning way less anxiety if some particularly curious pets or kids get too close to it.
What To Keep In Mind
It has some weight to it, and it doesn’t feature bottom wheels. While it has side handles for lifting, you’ll want to let it cool down before moving it, as the exterior panels get hot to the touch. Our advice? Find the perfect spot you want it in and then switch it on (you can always move it again later when it’s cool).
Also, while it’s a dream for self-contained spaces like home offices or bedrooms, it isn’t built to efficiently conquer massive, open-plan living areas.
Why “Gentle” Air Matters
As someone who works for a health and wellness magazine, I’m constantly considering how products might affect my body, skin and health. Many standard fan heaters force hot, dry air across the room, which can strip your skin barrier of essential moisture, worsen dry eyes and aggravate winter allergies by kicking up dust. But the Mill’s heating elements are enclosed, so it doesn’t burn dust or deplete your room’s natural humidity.
Plus, because it doesn’t have a fan, it’s completely silent. There’s no buzzing, rattling or fan noise, which creates a peaceful, undisturbed environment ideal for deep sleep, evening meditation or focused winter WFH days.
The Verdict:
After running this in my bedroom at night, I woke up without that dreaded, scratchy “dry throat” feeling. My skin didn’t feel parched which is an absolute win for anyone prone to the dry-skin winter blues.

The Technology: Effortless Warmth, Zero Tech-Stress
A heater with WiFi? That sounds futuristic! But don’t let the word WiFi intimidate you. You don’t need to be a tech genius to use this heater. Mill has designed an incredibly user-friendly app that turns your phone into a simple remote control. If you dread getting out from under a cosy duvet just to turn on a freezing room’s heater, this will feel like a luxury you didn’t know you needed.
Admittedly, setting up an app takes a few more steps than you’d expect for a home heater, and it offers way more advanced configuration settings than the average person might need. But once you’re past that initial hurdle, the daily benefits are seamless. And the app provides tiny value adds that really well, add up.
Mill Heat Boost
Traditional oil radiators are notoriously slow to warm up. Mill solves this with a closed design that forces hot air to rise faster, distributing heat 29% more efficiently than standard radiators. It easily blankets spaces up to 28m² in a cosy, even warmth.
An App That Does It All

Instead of constantly turning a dial up and down all day, you can use the app to turn it on and off and set your ideal temperature. The radiator gently maintains that perfect level of comfort, and even features “Open Window Detection” – automatically pausing if it senses a sudden drop in temperature, saving energy while you air out your room.
Another underrated feature is the radiator’s predictive heating; it literally learns your home’s patterns so it’s optimised and more efficient. In practice, this plays out where an algorithm can switch the heating on earlier in order to reach a chosen temp at an exact time indicated.
An Energy-Conscious Queen
The Mill Gentle Air really tries to be as energy efficient as possible and rand-conscious (and load shedding-conscious) Saffers will appreciate that. Of course, we’ve already mentioned it being 29% more efficient at distributing heat and the “Open Window Detection”, but there’s more…
You can also track your energy consumption in the app. The app goes as far as to tell you, not only how many watts the radiator uses but how much that costs you. While there isn’t a ZAR option, I just took the amount of electricity I bought for the month, divided that by the number of units I got to get a rand per kilowatt number. Then I typed that rand value into good ole Google to see how many Pounds (there are other currencies, too) that was per Kilowatt. And then I set the pound number per Kilowatt in the app.
After that, I can use the app to watch how much energy (and therefore money) the radiator consumes over the day, month and year. Spoiler: you’ll be blown away by how energy efficient it actually is which means you can enjoy getting toasty sans the guilt of burning cash.

The Verdict: Is It Worth It?
The Mill Gentle Air WiFi 2000W Radiator is admittedly an investment compared to budget heaters. But if you view your home environment as a pillar of your physical and mental well-being, it’s worth every rand.
It delivers clean, silent and skin-friendly warmth wrapped in a gorgeous Scandi package that elevates your decor rather than disrupting it. For anyone looking to curate a healthier, calmer and cosier winter sanctuary, this gets our stamp of approval.
