The Best Road Trips

If you've got a 4x4, travelling down the spine of these iconic Cape mountains is a superb four-day adventure. If you don't have a 4x4, the northern section as far as Wupperthal is suitable for normal sedan.

Start your journey in Clanwilliam where you spend your first night, then cross the Pakhuis Pass and spend your second night on one of the charming guest farms in the Biedouw Valley.

In August, the spring flowers here are magnificent. Don't miss out on the Bushman paintings along the Sevilla rock art trail. Spend your third night in the quaint mission station of Wupperthal (houses for rent from tourist info). The next day's route follows a track for 4x4s or high-clearance bakkies down the spine of the mountains to the Driehoeks River, where you can spend your last night at any one of the guest farms, such as Sanddrif or Kromrivier.
