Let’s face it, we’ve buckled down and stamped out the old cliché that men are better drivers than women. Still, navigating the chaotic car-parts lingo is not for the faint of heart. We get a bad rap because we don’t always know what’s going on. Women’s Health is taking the bull by its wheels and is dedicated to providing you with your very own car glossary. Let’s start with what’s underneath…

Caution: With this understanding of common car terms, you can now contribute more to your partners’ car conversations.

Brake Pad
A replaceable lining on each brake, typically made of a tough composite fibre.

Shock Absorbers
Part of the suspension system, theses gas-filled cylinders work to dampen shocks coming up from the road and (now this is crucial) ensure all four wheels stay in contact with the road at all times. Worn shocks let a wheel “bounce”, making the car difficult to control.

Sidewall
The sidewall of a tyre is the rigid part between the tread and the rim. It’s fortified with steel and keeps the entire unit together. If the sidewall is damaged in any way, it should be replaced immediately.

Tread
The tread is the rubber on a tyre that meets the road. Tread patterns vary depending on whether your tyre is a performance, off-road or general-purpose tyre – but all need to be replaced before they become smooth.

Traction
How well your tyre grips.

Silencer
Reduces the noise your exhaust pipe makes.
