Blends With Benefits
Summer is undeniably smoothie season – and with plenty of seasonal fruit around, one quick whiz in the blender and that's breakfast.
These great-tasting smoothies in gemstone colours will have you drinking to your health before you can say "rise and shine".
Megan Hussey, founder and co-owner of healthy eatery Osumo, says: "Always use the best ingredients available. Use a good-quality low-fat frozen yoghurt (Marcel's if possible) and fresh frozen fruit, and go easy on the ice." Her favourite combinations: mixed berries, banana, Woolworths organic vanilla yoghurt, vanilla essence and a scoop of whey protein, or vanilla frozen yoghurt, peanut butter, honey and banana. "I love the decadent flavour," says Hussey, "and it's healthy and well-balanced too."
Flaxseed minimises spots and fine lines, Vitamin C packed berries create collagen and cleanse skin, while pomegranates (also high in Vitamin C) reduce oxidative damage.
In a blender combine:
1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and halved
1 cup frozen blueberries
175ml summer berries frozen yoghurt (we used Marcel’s)
2 tbsp ground flaxseed
1 cup pure pomegranate juice
Pulse first, then process on a high speed until smooth.
