
It’s not hard to see how the humble hamburger became summer’s ultimate comfort food. With minimal effort (and ingredients), you can cook a patty that’s immeasurably better than drive-through fare. Try one of these homemade gourmet burgers this weekend.
Black Bean Burger + Balsamic Onion Jam
Makes 4 servings
What You Need
1 1/2 cups canned no-salt-added black beans, rinsed and drained
1/2 yellow bell pepper, sliced
1/3 cup roughly chopped red onion
3/4 cup shredded carrot
1/3 cup dry quick-cooking oats
2 1/2 tsp canola oil
1/2 tsp cumin
Method
Put all ingredients in a food processor and pulse until combined, two to three minutes. Form into four patties. Mist a piece of aluminum foil with cooking spray and place foil on the grill. Cook patties on foil for five minutes, flip, then cook five minutes more. To serve, top each patty with three tablespoons Balsamic Onion Jam (recipe below).
Balsamic Onion Jam
What You Need
1 large red onion cut into eighths
1 tbsp canola oil
1/4 tsp salt
1 pinch freshly ground black pepper
2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 tsp fresh thyme leaves
1/2 tsp sugar
Per serving: 714 kilojoules, 5.5 g fat (0 g sat), 25 g carbs, 70 mg sodium, 6 g fibre, 7 g protein.
