“Great food is like great sex: The more you have, the more you want.”

You may think that Valentine’s Day is cheesier than a quattro formaggio pizza with extra parmesan, but put in a little effort and you’ll make your partner happier than a seagull with a French fry. Which is a worthwhile outcome, we think.

And when we say “effort”, we don’t mean buying flowers or fragrance. No. We recommend making your partner a wonderful meal (not pizza) and then indulging in incredible sex. There is no better way to celebrate your love than with a lot of food and a little hanky panky. No one can argue with that.

To help you pull off this incredible feat and to wow the pants off your beloved, we’ve teamed up with Graham Nielson, the head chef at 9th Avenue Bistro, to provide you with some amazing recipes. In last year’s Conde Nast House & Garden SA Gourmet Magazine Awards, 9th Avenue Bistro was named as South Africa’s favourite restaurant, so you must know these recipes are going to be pretty special.

Plus, they contain ingredients with aphrodisiacal qualities (helping you with the hanky panky we mentioned earlier.) So, go out shopping, make the food, buy a sex toy from Matilda’s and have the best night of 2018. Here we go:

  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tbls lemon juice
  • 1 tsp Worcester
  • 1 tbls horseradish
  • 1/2 tsp ground celery seeds
  • Pinch salt

Whisk all the ingredients together (how simple is that) and serve the mixture either in the oyster half shell or tip an oyster with some vinaigrette into a shot glass.

Main: Flash fried prawns with grilled figs, asparagus and goats cheese

  • 12 prawn tails – peeled
  • 12 asparagus spears
  • 3 figs
  • 2 handful rocket leaves
  • 1 handful torn basil leaves
  • 2 tbls toasted almond flakes
  • 1 log chevin (goat’s cheese)

  • 2 cloves garlic – minced (finely chop)
  • 2 tsp ginger – minced
  • 1/2 tsp fresh red chilli – minced
  • 1 tbls chopped coriander
  • 2 tbls olive oil

1. Mix all the marinade ingredients together and mix in the prawn tails. Keep in the fridge until ready to cook.

2. Slice the 3 figs in half and brush with olive oil. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt.

3. In a frying pan or grill, cook the figs over a medium heat until lightly caramelized. Set these aside until needed.

4. In a pot of boiling water cook the asparagus spears for about 30 seconds to a minute. Remove from water, sprinkle with salt and keep warm until ready to use.

5. Toss the figs, rocket, basil and almonds together and arrange on the plate. Grate over some goat’s cheese (chevin).

6. Arrange the asparagus next to the salad.

7. In a hot frying pan, flash fry the prawns until done, making sure to season with salt.

8. Finish the dish with the prawns and serve.

Dessert: Chocolate Espresso Pots with Cardamom whipped cream

  • 175g dark chocolate – chopped
  • 1 1/3 cups cream
  • 2/3 cup full-cream milk
  • 2 tsp instant espresso powder
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 2 tbls sugar
  • 6 ramekins

1. Preheat oven to 150C

2. Bring cream, milk, coffee and a small pinch of salt to the boil, stirring carefully to dissolve the espresso powder

3. Place chocolate into a heat proof. Add the milk mixture and mix until the chocolate has melted and the mixture is smooth

4. In another bowl, whisk together the sugar and egg yolks and slowly pour into the chocolate mixture – making sure you whisk continuously. This will make a delicious chocolate custard.

5. Strain the custard through a fine sieve and cool completely. Stir the mixture occasionally while it cools.

6. Divide the mixture between 6 ramekins and place the ramekins into a baking tray, half filled with water. Cover the tray with foil and bake on the centre rack in the oven for 24 – 30 minutes. The centres should still be wobbly.

7. Remove from oven and allow to cool

Cardamom Cream

  • 1 cup cream
  • 1 tbls icing sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cardamom

1. Whip cream to a soft peak, add sugar and cardamom and continue whipping until you reach desired consistency.

2. Top the chocolate pots with the cream and serve! Yum yum!
